In 2019, author JANE LEAVY sat down at breakfast with baseball greats JOE TORRE and SANDY KOUFAX prior to MARIANO RIVERA’s Baseball HOF induction ceremony in Cooperstown, NY.
During their conversation, Torre (an ex-catcher and legendary manager) and Koufax (a three-time Cy Young winner) analyzed what was wrong with modern-day pitching, which emphasizes velocity.
“Hard to watch,” Torre said.
“I don’t watch,” Koufax said.
The exchange proved to be an eye-opener for Leavy, who had previously written biographies about Koufax, MICKEY MANTLE and BABE RUTH but hadn’t yet found a fourth to complete her own Mt. Rushmore. Instead, following the pace-of-play rule changes, she turned to solving issues with the game itself. Her latest book, “Make Me Commissioner,” was released Tuesday.
